• The dosage of drug delivered is given by the amount of charge moved around the circuit.

• The iontophoretic dose is determined by the amount of current (Amperes or Amps) over a period of time (minutes). Thus, the unit dose is Amp*minutes.

• For a positively-charged drug, the active electrode must be made the Anode (+). Like charges repel. The positive (+) lead is connected to the active electrode.

• For a negatively-charged drug, the active electrode must be made the Cathode (-). The negative (-) lead is connected to the active electrode.

The Ionto Patch system is ideal for animal use. The IontoPatch eliminates the invasion of the joint or skin by a needle and reducing the chance of infection at the injection site, in addition to, reducing tissue damage. Perfect treatment for needle phobic horses or dogs. Once the pad is filled with medication the pad is placed directly over the target area and covered with vet wrap or Elastakon(tm) and left in place for 24 hours.  The IontoPatch provides a steady stream of medication for a 24 hour period then automatically shuts off. After treatment simply remove the electrode pad and discard. 


The Ionto Patch a phoresing system that has an innovative self contained battery inside a specially designed phoresing pad. The current from the battery carries drug molecules into the skin that is then dispersed into the system. This single pad system carries both positive and negative charged drugs. 

 

THE POWER OF IONTOPHORESIS

         Although traditional means of iontophoresis have been restricted to that of galvanic devices, recent studies indicate modern microcurrent devices using alternating current to be far superior and include cumulative results of improved ATP levels, collagen and elastin production and blood circulation.

What is IontoPhoresis?

Phoresis means transmission. IontoPhoresis is the use of electrical wave to enhance the delivery of topically applied drugs. Effectively, medicines contained within or under ultrasound gel are pushed by the waves and driven deep below the skin. IontoPhoresis administered medications can penetrate the body to a much deeper level than those massaged by hand over the surface of the skin.

One of the greatest benefits to delivering medications via phoresis is that the medication can be delivered locally to a desired area. Oral pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs are introduced to the entire body in equal amounts. Even if you only need pain relief in your Tendon or an anti-inflammatory in your swollen bursa the oral medication enters the system instead of being site specific. The entire system is medicated and the side effects of this modality - the brain, the heart, the lungs even if they might not need the drug. With phoresis, the part of the body that receives the medication is the part of the body that needs it.

Only some medications can be delivered phoretically. The process is dependent on many, many factors. For example, the type of drug and molecule size are critical. The drug molecule has to be just the right size to be picked up by the waves and the right size to pass through the body tissue. As well, the medicinal molecule can't react with the ultrasound gel. It must also be able to survive the effects of the method of transmission, ie. The wave of electricity or ultrasound. The delivery of medications via phoresis is truly a science unto its own.
