| Cold Laser, Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a therapeutic medical and veterinary treatment that uses low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes to alter cellular function. They are termed "cold" lasers because they do not elevate tissue temperature. |
| Their are several types of low power laser we commonly see in therapeutic use are the infrared which can penetrate to 5-10 centimetres, the visible-red with a penetration of 12 millimetres and multi color light therapy that works on different frequency wavelengths. |
Effects of laser are thought to work on the biological field theory which suggests that a biological energy field exists around every cell. Injury and or disease causes this energy to go out of phase with normal frequency. The resonant effect of low power laser can restore the normal energetic status of the field and so stimulate the repair and healing process. |
Lasers are primarily used for their analgesic effects and for wound healing. They can also be used to stimulate meridians and relax muscles. |
The repair of wounds by laser also seems to result in better strength of repair, and less chance of amount of exuberant granulation. |
Light therapy can:
1. Increase vascularity by increasing the formation of new capillaries with additional ones that replace the damaged ones. New blood vessels speed up the healing process by carrying more oxygen and nutrients and moving the waste products.
2. Stimulate the production of collagen, a common protein found in the body used to repair damaged tissue and replace old tissue.
3. Stimulate the release of ATP which is the major carrier of energy to all the cells.
4. Increase lymphatic system activity to reduce edema at a faster rate than normal.
5. Increase RNA and DNA synthesis to help damaged tissue cells to be replace more promptly.
6. Reduce excitability of nervous tissue (pain relief).
7. Stimulate fibroblastic activities which aids in the repair process.
8. Increase phagocytosis activities which is the process of eliminating dead or degenerated cell structures due to tissue injury or chronic degeneration.
9. Increase a thermal like effect in the tissue, raising the temperature of the cells which aids in the healing process.
